Amelia is 17 en heeft nog nooit langer dan een half jaar op dezelfde plek gewoond. Telkens wanneer een relatie van haar moeder misloopt, pakken ze hun spullen in en verhuizen ze naar een andere stad. De hoeveelheid scholen die Amelia gezien heeft, kan ze niet meer op haar handen en voeten samen tellen en ook heeft ze al teveel stukgelopen relaties in haar leven gezien om zelf nog in het concept van romantiek te geloven.
Wanneer ze met haar moeder naar Holmes Chapel verhuist, hoopt ze dat ze voor en keer langer dan vier maanden kunnen blijven.
